Castlepoint

Castlepoint

A bit of a hairy drive over the Rimutakas in a gale but getting to explore Castlepoint was well worth it!

Snow on the Rimutakas

snow

I'm not sure how safe it is getting sent to the top of the Rimutakas in a snow storm?! It's certainly not the easiest getting back down when your windscreen looks like this! I heard the shots looked good though!

My first solo SNG job and it's a holed up gunman whos shot dead a cop and wounded three others...I spent most of the first night stuck inside the police cordon until we were told to get out...A crazy few days!

Screw the Pharmaceutical Industry!

So a coupla weeks back I got the flu... somehow after spending my first day unable to get out of bed I managed to stagger into town to get some cold n flu tablets... after being looked at like I was a buyer for a meth lab in the first couple of stores, I was given (well in exchange for 20 bucks) some Sudafed "PE" and told it was good... I few hours later (and after feeling no better at all) I decided to have a read about Sudafed "PE". It turns out that the "PE" stands for phenylephrine - which although it sounds like pseudoeffidrine (which actually works as a decongestant), phenylephrine was actually approved by the FDA in the 70's as an ingredient in eye drops (because it restricts and shrinks blood vessels) and has only recently been introduced as a nasal decongestant because pharmacies have had to restrict the sales of pseudoeffidrine due the the meth or "P" epidemic. This despite the fact that most tests have shown phenylephrine to works no better than a placebo as a decongestant (and the only ones that have shown it to work having been industry sponsored).

Brilliant - 20 bucks down the drain.

My second beef with the pharmaceuticals was after having a blocked ear following my flu - a trip down to the local pharmacy and I was back with "the latest and greatest" - Audiclean (in exchange for 22 bucks this time). After a couple of hours (and once again no result) I decided to check out what was in Audiclean...and guess what - 100% salt water! 22 bucks for salt-frickin-water!

I guess it does come in a vaguely pressurised bottle! (which is of absolutely no help at all).

So that makes 42 bucks down the drain

I guess now it starts to make sense that the pharmaceutical industry charges tens of thousands of dollars for drugs like Herceptin - they may actually have to put some work into that one, and it may actually work!

Te Apiti Wind Farm

It seems like forever since I've updated this blog - I guess thats what having a proper job will do to you! Anyways, yesterday I took a drive up to the Manawatu to check out the Te Apiti wind farm, it was a bit of a gamble since it was getting late, I really didn't know where I was going and there really wasn't any signposting (other than the giant propellers on the hill!) but after a few wrong turns and a 10k drive up a dirt road I finally made it. It's an awesome place - strange and kinda eeire and yet quite beautiful at the same time.

I'll try to update this thing a bit more regularly from now on!

C.W. Stoneking

Last night I got to see the amazing Australian blues man C.W. Stoneking. It's quite a strange experience seeing someone on stage that really doesn't match the sound coming from the speakers, to understand what I mean you can check out C.W. here.... The only downer to the night was the amount of people who thought it was a good idea to have a yarn with their mates by yelling over the music...that's what the bar is for dick! Grrrr.

Raetihi's Abandoned Mental Asylum

Simon and I were up in Hamilton for Onge's 30th a week or so ago when we heard about this place. Worzel told us there was an abandoned metal hospital in a little town south of Ohakune, and it even had baby sized coffins still sitting in the basement! It sounded like something out of a horror movie, we had to check it out.

It turned out it wasn't a mental hospital at all but just an old hospital, still it was pretty creepy and messed up - the pouring rain and low cloud didn't help brighten things up too much either. Luckily we somehow managed to avoid those baby sized coffins!

When it comes down to it, I'm not always the best at keeping in contact with friends and family and letting them know what I'm up to so I thought I'd keep a bit of diary of adventures n' things just in case anyone's interested. Hope you like it Mum!

Just picked this up from the library, should be an interesting read!

Take the crazy-assed guitar of Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and add the insane rhythm monster that is Zach Hill and you have what is easily my favorite album of the last six months or so!
